July 15, 2024 – ECDAN’s first-ever Masterclass Series in Systems Thinking for Early Childhood Development (ECD) created a unique global learning platform for practitioners, policymakers, donors, and researchers, featuring 14 free, interactive online sessions from April 23 to May 2, 2024. This immersive series brought together over 20 leading experts who explored systems thinking fundamentals, real-world applications, and evaluation methods for ECD. Curated by ECDAN’s Global Technical Lead, Shekufeh Zonji, and NORC Senior Fellow, Margaret Hargreaves, with support from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the Masterclass provided a comprehensive dive into systems thinking for ECD professionals worldwide.
Deep Dive into Systems Thinking for ECD
Organized around seven key themes, the series provided a robust exploration into various aspects of systems and complexity, covering:
- Systems and complexity-informed evaluation
- Complex systems insights and analysis
- Transformation within ECD systems
- Equitable systems evaluation
- Mixed methods for evaluating change
- Structural systems change in complex environments
- Systems change capacity building
Building a Global Learning Community
The live, interactive format encouraged active engagement and reflection, with surveys after each session to capture participant insights. Participants attending at least seven sessions earned a digital certificate of participation, which many shared on LinkedIn and other platforms. Over 4,000 individuals joined the live sessions, and 327 participants earned certificates by completing the required sessions.
Extending Reach Through Accessible Content
ECDAN partnered with experts to design each session for maximum educational impact. All sessions were recorded, uploaded to YouTube and the Masterclass website, and translated into Spanish, ensuring accessibility for a global audience.
The Systems Masterclass Series has become a key resource for advancing ECD knowledge, promoting collaboration, and bridging accessibility gaps, making essential learning available to a worldwide community dedicated to advancing early childhood development.
