April 2025 – The World Health Organization’s new report presents internationally comparable global, regional and country-level estimates and trends for maternal mortality between 2000 and 2023. It reveals that 260,000 women died from pregnancy or childbirth complications in 2023, with 70 percent of deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa. It calls for urgent investment in midwives, health workers, and equitable systems to close care gaps and improve sexual and reproductive health.
