February 17, 2026 – WHO published a technical brief that aligns the latest maternal mortality estimates with whether a country is conflict-affected or considered institutionally fragile. The report contains key messages for how and why maternal mortality increases in fragile and conflict settings. It also highlights innovative approaches to improve maternal health care from Colombia, Ethiopia, Haiti, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, and Ukraine that demonstrate that saving lives is possible even in the most challenging environments.
