IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings and Accompanying Field Checklist

2008 – The Inter-Agency Standing Committee published guidelines that reflect the insights of practitioners from different geographical regions, disciplines and sectors, and reflect an emerging consensus on good practice among practitioners. The core idea behind them is that, in the early phase of an emergency, social supports are essential to protect and support mental health and psychosocial well-being. In addition, the guidelines recommend selected psychological and psychiatric interventions for specific problems.

The primary purpose of these guidelines is to enable humanitarian actors and communities to plan, establish and coordinate a set of minimum multi-sectoral responses to protect and improve people’s mental health and psychosocial well-being in the midst of an emergency. The full guidelines include 25 action sheets that explain how to implement each minimum response across eleven areas.
